City seeking expressions of interest to explore future of Monarch Theatre
Medicine Hat – The City of Medicine Hat issued an expression of interest (EOI) for the Monarch Theatre on January 21, encouraging interested parties to submit their ideas on how to optimize the potential of this important historic landmark.
The City of Medicine Hat purchased the Monarch after the previous owner, the City Centre Development Agency (CCDA), dissolved in May 2021. The move was intended to provide stability to the property and to facilitate future possibilities including the sale, lease, or alternative operating models for the property.
“The City was quick to purchase the Monarch as a way to ensure that there would be adequate time to carefully consider its future so that it remains a vibrant part of the downtown core,” said Aaron Nelson, Manager of Cultural Experiences and Events. “Now we want to hear from the community about the future of the Monarch. Are there creative new opportunities to use this facility in a way that benefits the community?”
Pre-COVID, the Monarch Theatre was running as a theatre primarily showing films, with a small portion of the business focused on presenting live music or hosting events. The operating model consisted of part-time staff dedicated to the Monarch (concession staff and projectionist) with general administration handled by CCDA. Staffing needs were supplemented by volunteer support from the Friends of the Monarch Society. In addition, the Friends of the Monarch Society assisted in fundraising efforts to support capital improvement over the years.
The oldest still-operating movie theatre in Western Canada, the theatre has been beautifully restored and recently upgraded including new seating, a fully digital projection system, upgraded HVAC systems, and more. Today, the Monarch is a 110-year-old-purpose built theatre and designated as a Municipal Heritage Resource. The theatre can seat 402 patrons and can project a variety of digital media.
“We know that for many people in our community, the Monarch is near and dear to their hearts,” added Nelson. “We’re excited to see what ideas the community brings forward.”
The EOI will not necessarily result in any subsequent negotiations or agreements, but rather allows an exploration of possibilities with input from the community. City staff will review all submissions and provide recommendations to council.
Individual or groups interested in sharing their ideas on the future of the Monarch Theatre have until February 28 to respond to the EOI. It can be accessed on the City’s Bids and Tenders website.
