Clear Your Gear

Local resident, Tom James, takes pride in finding ways to preserve the environment and recently took the initiative of procuring recycling bins for used fishing equipment.
“I love fishing in Medicine Hat even though I mostly go to enjoy the beautiful views and relax with my friends,” laughs James. “However, I couldn’t help but notice used tackle either left behind or that had washed up to shore when the river levels lowered. As an angler, I think it’s our responsibility to help protect the wildlife in the area and the natural surroundings.”
Shortly thereafter, James discovered a company called, Clear Your Gear, which sent him bins that he could install in various locations around the city to encourage people to recycle their fishing line and tackle gear.
Together with some Parks and Recreation staff, James was able to install recycling containers at Police Point Park and at the boat launch in Strathcona. With future locations planned for Echo Dale Regional Park and Connaught Pond, Tom hopes to encourage even more people to recycle their fishing gear and make a positive impact on the environment.
“Medicine Hat has so much to offer for fishing enthusiasts - we’re so lucky to have sturgeon, walleye, white fish, pike and more, right here in the river,” says James. “I want to help make sure we are protecting these species and their habitats for generations to come.”
