Construction Commences on New 44 MW Power Generation Plant
In lieu of an in-person gathering to mark the start of construction, officials opted to celebrate with a commemorative ground breaking video.
Unit 17 is located on city-owned land at the Cousins West power plant site west of Box Springs Road and 52 Street Northwest, adjacent to Unit 16, which was commissioned in 2017.
“The City has a proud history of providing safe, reliable power and continues to demonstrate innovation with new initiatives and continuous improvement,” said Brad Maynes, Managing Director of Energy and Infrastructure. “This new plant uses state of the art technology for efficient use of resources.”
The General Electric LM6000 simple cycle natural gas turbine includes a heat recovery unit that increases efficiency and a selective catalytic reduction (SCR) system to reduce nitrous oxide (NOx) emissions to meet airshed and environmental approval requirements.
On August 17, 2020, City Council approved bylaw #4625 to incur indebtedness in the amount of $66 million to install the new electric generation plant.
Unit 17 will increase the City’s total generation capacity by 44 megawatts to meet growing load requirements. The plant also provides N-1 backup capability that will maintain adequate power supply in case one of the largest generators fails.
The plant is expected to be in service in 2022. Residents may find out more about the project on the city’s website.
