Council Highlights January 16 2023

Councillor Robins provided thanks to departing Managing Director of Public Services, Brian Mastel, and offered praise for his service to the community and the organization. This meeting marked his last City Council meeting with the City of Medicine Hat, and his last day of work with the City of Medicine Hat will be January 27.

City Council adopted the minutes of the Economic, Land and Strategic Development Committee of January 10, 2023 into the corporate record.

City Council adopted the minutes of the Energy and Infrastructure Committee of December 15, 2022 into the corporate record as amended and approved a motion for a capital budget amendment of $1,066,932 to repair the Unit 15 Hot Section after it was damaged due to an unfortunate workplace incident upon delivery. Administration confirmed that following the incident a review occurred that concluded safety protocols were followed, and no injuries were sustained because of the incident.

City Council adopted the minutes of the Public Services Committee of January 9, 2023 into the corporate record. Council then approved a motion to direct Administration to invite Fish & Wildlife to appear in Council Chambers to answer questions in relation to item 4 of the January 9, 2023 Public Services Committee Outstanding Items List – Wildlife (Ungulate) Bylaw.

City Council passed Bylaw 4719, a bylaw of the City of Medicine Hat to amend the Borrowing Debenture Bylaw, Bylaw 3914. The amendment will see an increase in the City’s demand operating facility at TD Bank from $10 million to $75 million. City Council passed first reading of the Bylaw at the December 17, 2022 meeting of City Council.

Mayor Clark introduced a notice of motion related to Invest Medicine Hat. The motion directed Administration to provide recommendations to Council pursuant to Section 7 of the Administrative Organization Bylaw 4662 regarding the departments and business units in the Invest Medicine Hat Division at the February 21, 2023 City Council meeting. The motion was defeated.
