Council Highlights March 7 2022

Xanthe Isbister, Curator of Galleries and Collections at the Esplanade Arts and Heritage Centre; and Sierra Zukowski, TREX Assistant provided a presentation to City Council on Visual Arts experiences and events in Medicine Hat. Following the presentation, local artist Jim Marshall presented City Council with a gift of original art.
Robert Sissons, Manager of Planning in Planning and Development Services, presented as the City’s regulator on Bylaw #4692, a bylaw of the City of Medicine Hat to adopt the Northwest Area Structure Plan.
Nathan Arthur and Marcus Paterson, planners at Stantec Inc. also presented on Bylaw #4692, providing an overview of the proposed area structure plan as the consultants working on behalf of the City’s developer, Invest Medicine Hat.
Following the public hearing, City Council tabled the vote on Bylaw #4692 to allow further opportunity to contemplate the options within the Northwest Industrial Area Structure Plan.
Council received the minutes of the Energy and Infrastructure Committee meeting of February 17 for information and approved the Gas Distribution Quality Management Plan.
Council received the minutes of the Council Employee Committee meeting of February 23 for information.
Council received the minutes of the Corporate Services Committee meeting of February 24 for information and approved two items for adoption: the 2022 Tax Auction Reserve Bid, and Electronic Communications Options for Customers for Assessment and Taxation Notices.
Council received the minutes of the Public Services Committee meeting of February 28 for information and tabled the approval of the Parks and Recreation Master Plan.
Council received the minutes of the Administrative Committee of March 2 for information.
City Council passed first reading of Bylaw #4961, a bylaw of the City of Medicine Hat to establish a process for sending assessment and taxation notices, documents and other information by electronic means.
Under new business, City Council City approved the appointment of an interim City Manager. Former Chief Administrative Officer (CAO), Merete Heggelund, who retired from the role in October of 2018, will serve in the role temporarily while Council undertakes the search for a new City Manager. Ms. Heggelund will commence in the role on March 14 and has agreed to serve in the position until City Council has completed the full selection process for a new City Manager.
