Council Highlights October 19 2020
Mayor Clugston introduced a new item of business to announce South Country Co-op as the new naming partner for the regional events centre. The agreement will see the facility, currently named after Canalta Real Estate Services Inc., renamed Co-op Place. Josie Doll, Corporate Partnerships Coordinator with the City of Medicine Hat, shared a brief presentation and Paul Haynes, CEO of South Country Co-op and Carmen Hudson, Marketing and Community Relations Manager with South Country Co-op were in attendance for the announcement. A ceremony to unveil the new signage will occur in the coming weeks.
For information, City Council received the minutes of the October 6 Audit Committee meeting. The Tri-annual Management Report for the period ending August 31, 2020 was shared at the meeting, outlining the City’s current financial challenges and corresponding response.
Through Development and Infrastructure Committee, Council approved a recommendation to extend the current off-site levy rates contained in Bylaw No. 4157 to December 31, 2021.
Through the Municipal Planning Commission, City Council approved 1st reading of Bylaw #4643, a bylaw of the City of Medicine Hat to amend Bylaw #4168, the Land Use Bylaw. The owners are proposing an amendment to rezone the subject land, 44 & 46 Somerset Road SE, from Low Density Residential (R-LD) to Medium Density Residential (RMD) to allow for a multi-unit residential development (four dwelling units) on the parcel. A public hearing will be held at the November 16 meeting of City Council.
Under new business, City Council approved the sales and pricing strategies for two infill properties; 1583 Oxford Street SE, and the TransCanada Highway (TCH)/Box Springs property. The properties will be marketed at purchase prices of $220,000 and $3,310,920 respectively.
Councillor Friesen shared the results of the Health Quality Council of Alberta’s 2019 designated supportive living resident and family experience survey. Cypress View facilities received high scores in all areas of the survey. The Cypress View Foundation is supported by the City of Medicine Hat, Cypress County and the Town of Redcliff.
