Digital parking launching at downtown lot

Medicine Hat – A new way to pay for parking downtown will launch at Towne Square beginning Monday, July 4, when the lot, at the corner of 1 Street SE and 6 Avenue SE, returns to a paid model.

HotSpot is an easy-to-use mobile parking app which allows customers to pay for parking remotely through their smart phone and is the same app used at Medicine Hat College.

“We considered a number of options before deciding to go digital,” said Aaron Nelson, Manager of Cultural Experiences and Events. “Many communities are beginning to transition to digital because of how easy it is for the end user, whether you’ll only be a few minutes, or are running errands all afternoon. We’re excited to be able to pilot this technology in the heart of downtown.”

Once the app has been downloaded from either the Apple or Play store, users upload a balance to a virtual wallet which is used to make a digital payment while parked at Towne Square. The app also includes a refund feature, which allows users to refund their parking payment if they arrive back at their vehicle before the allotted time is up.

Anyone without the app can instead scan a QR code and pay by credit card.

The reintroduction of paid parking at Towne Square will be enforced from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Friday. The lot will be free to access outside of business hours and on weekends.

Signs and information, including the QR code, will be placed throughout the Towne Square parking lot.

Staff will be on-site beginning Monday, July 4 to Friday, July 8, to assist patrons in downloading the app and answering any parking related questions.

“We are excited to be able to bring digital parking to the downtown, knowing it’s a great option for customers to use,” Nelson added. “Having this parking app is part of a user-friendly approach while we pave the way to make paying for parking as simple as possible.”

Annual parking passes for Towne Square are also available for purchase through the app.
