Flying Legends of Victory Tour lands at YXH this summer
Medicine Hat – The Medicine Hat Regional Airport (YXH) will welcome the B-17, a rare historical military plane, beginning Tuesday, June 27 until Sunday, July 2 for the second stop of the Flying Legends of Victory Tour.
The tour is hosted by Family, Fun and Flight Medicine Hat and features an air bomber from the Commemorative Air Force (CAF) Airbase Arizona that was used in the Second World War. The B-17 Flying Fortress named Sentimental Journey is a high-flying, long-range bomber built in 1944 with heavy armor known for withstanding tough attacks. Sentimental Journey is one of only 10 B-17s in the world that is still flying out 13,000 that were produced between 1936 and 1945. Eight thousand of those were lost in combat.
“This is a rare opportunity for an up-close and personal inspection of one of the world’s most historic warbirds,” said Robbie Watson, Chairperson of Family, Fun and Flight Medicine Hat. “We’re excited to support CAF’s mission of educating generations about the role of aviation in combat history.”
“We are so fortunate to be one of only five stops in Canada on the tour this summer. This plane is considered one of the rarest in the world and it is a sight to see. We are thrilled to hear its roar on the runway here at YXH,” said Logan Boyd, Airport Manager.
Tours of the aircraft will be available from Tuesday, June 27 to Thursday, June 29 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Admission is $15 USD per person or $30 USD for a family of four. Tickets can be purchased at the gate.
Scheduled rides will occur from Friday, June 30 through Sunday, July 2 from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. Those interested in purchasing a ride on the historical plane can book a flight at www.FlyingLegendsTour.com.
Residents can expect increased activity both on land and in the air during the show. The B-17 is very loud during takeoff and motorists should be prepared for additional noise when travelling near the airport at 1 Airport Drive SW.
The Medicine Hat tour stop is presented by Family, Fun and Flight Medicine Hat, COPA Flight 171, the Medicine Hat Regional Airport, Days Inn by Wyndham, and Super T Aviation. The tour will also stop in Lethbridge, AB and Cranbrook, Penticton and Victoria, BC before heading back to the United States.

The CAF was founded to acquire, restore and preserve in flying condition a complete collection of combat aircraft which were flown by all military services of the United States, and selected aircraft of other nations, for the education and enjoyment of present and future generations. More than just a collection of airworthy warplanes from the past, the CAF's fleet of historic aircraft, known as the CAF Ghost Squadron, recreate, remind and reinforce the lessons learned from the defining moments in American military aviation history.
