Gas distribution upgrades in near Southview Centre begin Oct. 2
Medicine Hat – Work in the intersection of 13 Avenue SE and Southview Drive SE to upgrade gas distribution infrastructure begins Monday, Oct. 2, 2023 and is expected to last one week, depending on weather.
Though the intersection is not fully closed in either direction, motorists should expect delays or choose an alternate route.
The three right-hand lanes on northbound 13 Avenue SE will be closed and northbound traffic will detour into the turning lane to continue through the intersection.
The crosswalk on the south and east sides of the intersection will be closed during construction.
Simultaneously, the south lane of Southview Drive SE east of Park Meadows Drive SE will be closed but traffic continues in both directions.
Residents and businesses in the area have been directly notified of a planned gas outage during construction.
The work includes excavation up to two metres in depth. There will be heavy equipment on site and people may notice flames from a flare stack during testing, even into the evening hours. Perimeter fencing will be in place to keep patrons a safe distance away.
Motorists and cyclists are reminded to slow to a maximum 30 kilometers per hour in construction zones and adhere to all signage and flag personnel.
The City thanks residents for their patience during work that ensures continued safe and reliable natural gas supply to local homes and business.
