Hill Road SE closed this summer for water and sewer replacement
Medicine Hat – Starting Monday, July 4, the City of Medicine Hat begins work to replace water and sewer infrastructure on Sixth Street SE requiring the closure of Hill Road SE for the duration of the project.
The City maintains a comprehensive asset management plan that helps inform capital spending decisions in each budget cycle. The Sixth Street SE project will replace aging infrastructure with upgraded components to maintain reliable water and sewer service for modern residential and business demands.
To minimize future disruption to area residents, the City will also complete geometric improvements to the intersection at Sixth Street SE and Fifth Avenue SE to improve traffic flow, along with new curb and gutter, sidewalks and asphalt.
Through July and August, drivers will not be able to access Hill Road SE from South Railway Street SE and will detour around the construction area from atop the Southeast Hill.
Sidewalks along Hill Road SE will be closed to pedestrians due to the intersection closure at the top of the hill at Sixth Street SE and Fifth Avenue SE. The trail connecting Hill Road SE and the lower portion of Sixth Street SE that connects to Kingsway Avenue SE will also be closed. The remaining segments of walking trail along the southeast hill will remain open. Refer to the map for more information.

Perimeter fencing will surround excavated areas to ensure public safety. For the safety of workers and the public, travellers are asked to obey all construction signage and detours around the work area.
The project is expected to conclude at the end of August, depending on weather and unforeseen circumstances.
