Information sessions on destination parks, river recreation open to public

Medicine Hat – In following recommendations made in the Parks & Recreation Master Plan, staff will be hosting an information session regarding our destination parks and recreational opportunities around the South Saskatchewan River.

“The City completed the South Saskatchewan River Recreation & Leisure Opportunities Assessment in 2015,” said Scott Richter, acting Recreation Manager and Business & Innovation Manager for the Parks and Recreation Department. “With updated direction through our master plan now in place, this gives us an opportunity to refine the recommendations made back in 2015 to develop a strategy to protect our river valley, while residents and visitors continue to enjoy it as an amenity in our community.”

Prior to the public information session, a stakeholder engagement session will take place with roughly 75 sport and community groups invited to attend. The following public information session will be a chance to share the results of the stakeholder workshop, as well as provide a space to collect feedback as plans for our destination parks and open spaces are developed.

The information session will be held on Thursday, June 16, from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at Big Marble Go Centre.

Additional public input sessions will be held later this summer before any plans are finalized.

“We want to ensure our parks and open space create that balance between responsible recreational use with environmental protection,” Richter added. “These spaces should be celebrated as a key defining feature of our community. We should be able to enjoy them all year round and offer new, forward-thinking activities that are accessible for people of all ages and all abilities.”
