Intermunicipal Committee announces update to Intermunicipal Development Plan

Medicine Hat – Members of the Intermunicipal Committee, which includes the City of Medicine Hat, Cypress County and Town of Redcliff, held a press conference today in Cypress County council chambers to announce an upcoming update to the Tri-Area Intermunicipal Development Plan (IDP).

The purpose of an IDP is to establish a regional framework for attracting and coordinating economic opportunities and managing land use, subdivision and development in the area. It is a legislative requirement of the Municipal Government Act that municipalities with common boundaries must adopt an IDP.

The last update to the IDP was completed in 2020. These plans are not intended to be static documents and require periodic reviews and updates to reflect continually evolving conditions.

The Intermunicipal Committee is working to implement the following key objectives within this update:

  • Greater protection of lands for future urban development
  • Greater protection of lands for future/emerging economic development opportunities
  • Greater flexibility for residential development outside of urban areas

As part of this ongoing initiative, the Intermunicipal Committee invites residents of the area to a public open house next month. Residents are invited to the Desert Blume Golf Course clubhouse on Thursday, October 3, 2024 from 4 to 8 p.m.
