Kin 1 to temporarily close effective immediately

Medicine Hat – The Kin 1 arena inside the Kinplex will be closed to the public effective immediately.

“As part of our preventative maintenance and monitoring program, chemical analysis indicated there was ammonia in the brine refrigerant system,” said Jeff Hoglund, Manager of Building Services with the City of Medicine Hat. “Follow up testing confirmed an equipment failure. City staff and contractors are currently onsite to manage the necessary repairs.”

The leak is contained and no injuries occurred.

“We are working with our user groups to find other locations so they are able to continue playing during the remainder of their season,” said Scott Richter, acting Director of the Parks & Recreation Department.

The Kin 2 rink will remain open to the public and user groups currently booked for events and tournaments.

“The leak is contained to the system which operates in Kin 1,” Hoglund added. “Kin 2 remains operational at this time.”

There are robust ammonia detection and response systems in place to ensure the safety of staff and patrons.

The City of Medicine Hat thanks the community for their patience and understanding.
