Latest exhibit opening at TREX Space

Medicine Hat – To launch the latest travelling exhibition, Strange and Known Places, TREX Space will be giving away reproductions of artworks by 10 local artists.

Strange and Known Places has been a collaborative community initiative, offering mentorship and professional development opportunities for emerging and under-exhibited artists and cultural workers based in Medicine Hat. The project was co-curated by Kira Vlietstra, a recent graduate from the Medicine Hat College Art and Design Program, and Genevieve Farrell, Program Manager/Curator of the Alberta Foundation for the Arts Travelling Exhibition Program (TREX).

Featured artists include Vicki Hadland, Jenna Hoffart, Matias Martinez, Brenda Mercer, Chantel Schultz, Erica Teulon, Bridget Trout, Vergo Vanelle, Glen Velcro and Curtis Windover.

Many of the featured artists will be in attendance at the opening, selling art and other original pieces during the pop-up market, opening on Friday, November 19, and will be part of Midnight Madness.

“By bringing together this large group of talented and unique individuals, we are hoping to help popularize and celebrate the creativity, labour and history of people who have resided in Medicine Hat and taken inspiration from the local geography,” said Genevieve Farrell.

“I can’t wait for people to discover the work of this exciting group of multi-talented people,” said Kira Vlietstra. “We have work in photography, drawing, painting, textiles, glass and two music videos.”

“I want audiences to see the humor and colour and appreciate the amount of work that went into creating the background set, costumes and narrative for these funny clown characters acting out a businessman spoof,” said artist Erica Teulon.

Strange and Known Places will be on display at TREX Space (#2 516 3rd Street SE) from November 19, 2021 to January 19, 2022. Limited edition poster reproductions will be available at TREX Space and the Esplanade while supplies last.
