Litter Blitz campaign underway for 2026
The City of Medicine Hat’s annual Litter Blitz campaign is now underway. The 2026 edition of the event runs from Thursday, March 26 to Saturday, April 18. The City’s annual Litter Blitz aims to foster a collaborative approach to enhancing the natural beauty in Medicine Hat, empowering residents to join the City in its spring cleanup of trash from parks and public green spaces.
“Every year, residents share an exciting variety of motives behind why they participate in the Litter Blitz – whether it’s a love of their neighborhood park, the joy of keeping the community litter-free, enjoying a family outing, or team-building with a sports team, business, organization, and so many more,” said Jeff Quinlan, Parks Technician with the City of Medicine Hat. “It’s great to see so many Hatters share in our passion for being good environmental stewards, and we look forward to once again joining forces on this annual collaboration.”
How to participate
Residents can take part in the Litter Blitz at their own leisure. Participants can pick up free cleanup supplies (bags, gloves, etc.) from several locations during the campaign:
- Parks and Recreation office (88 Kipling Street) – Weekdays, 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.
- Police Point Park Nature Centre – Tues. to Sun., 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
- Big Marble Go Centre – Daily, varied hours (view facility hours)
Choose any park or green space and fill up trash bags with litter. Once they’re full, call or email the Parks team during business hours and inform them of the location of the bags needing to be picked up.
Litter Blitz participants can enter for a chance to win a prize by sharing a photo of themselves, their family, friends, or organization picking up litter around the community, and tag the City on Facebook or Instagram. Stay tuned for this year’s exciting prizes!
Thank-you BBQ
The Litter Blitz campaign concludes with a free barbecue hosted by the City’s Parks and Recreation department, with support from HAT Smart. The barbecue will be part of the Medicine Hat Interpretive Program’s (MHIP) Earth Day event in Police Point Park. The barbecue is a gesture to recognize the hard work and community contributions of this year’s Litter Blitz participants. The MHIP’s Earth Day event is Saturday, April 18 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. The appreciation barbecue will begin at 1:30 p.m., and will run until 3:30 p.m., or while supplies last.
