Managing Director of Public Services moving on from City of Medicine Hat
Medicine Hat – Brian Mastel, Managing Director of Public Services, has announced his resignation from the City of Medicine Hat just shy of his 11-year anniversary with the organization.
Mastel joined the City of Medicine Hat in January 2012 as General Manager of Finance, later moving to the role of Commissioner of Corporate Services and finally serving as the Managing Director of Public Services since 2019.
During his time as an executive leader with the City of Medicine Hat, Mastel was involved in many historic projects and initiatives, including efforts to reduce the City’s reliance on unpredictable commodity revenues to fund municipal services, a significant revamp of the treasury and investment management, the implementation of the City’s current enterprise resource planning system, introduction of transit on demand, and noteworthy capital projects such as the FLC expansion, as well as the Veiner Centre rebuild, expansion, and transition to Kerby.
“This is just a small sampling of the many initiatives in which Brian’s leadership and expertise played a role,” said City Manager Glenn Feltham. “He has been a steady force within the City organization through what have been some very transformative years."
City Manager Feltham went on to offer well-wishes and thanks to Mastel for his service.
“I would like to offer my personal thanks to Brian and wish him my best in his future endeavors. He is an exceptional colleague, and friend. He believes in our City. He will be missed.”
Mastel offered his own thoughts about his time with the organization.
“The passion and commitment that City has for this community is beyond incredible, and the opportunity to work with talented, multi-disciplinary teams has been very rewarding,” said Mastel. “I will be forever grateful for many of the experiences and learnings during the past 11 years with the City of Medicine Hat.”
Mastel will continue in his role until the end of January, and a recruitment process to determine the new managing director will commence in due course.
