National Day of Mourning ceremony remembers those lost to workplace injury or illness

Medicine Hat – The City of Medicine Hat will mark the National Day of Mourning at a public memorial service at the Medicine Hat Memorial Arboretum on Sunday, April 28 at 11 a.m. The observance remembers workers whose lives were lost in the workplace and acknowledges those who were disabled, injured, or afflicted with industrial disease.

“On April 28, we come together to honor and reflect on the lives lost, injuries sustained, and illnesses contracted due to work-related incidents,” said Ann Mitchell, City Manager. “The National Day of Mourning serves as a poignant reminder for us all to reaffirm our dedication to enhancing health and safety in our workplaces and prevent further tragedies.”

In 2023, Alberta mourned the loss of 165 individuals to work-related injuries or illnesses.

Those who are able are encouraged to attend the event or mark the day with a moment of silence at 11 a.m.

“Let us stand united in remembrance and commitment to fostering safer work environments for all,” adds Mitchell.
