National Plumbing Code of Canada
Notice
The National Plumbing Code of Canada (NPC) 2020 comes into force on April 1, 2023 and is applicable throughout the Province of Alberta. There are no Alberta specific technical variations or changes to the NPC 2020.
Alberta has jurisdiction over safety codes, as do all Canadian provinces and territories. The Alberta government worked closely with industry, municipal associations, and technical experts across the province to determine if Alberta needed to modify anything from the NPC 2020 publication. The government also works with Alberta’s Safety Codes Council to review safety codes and standards proposed for adoption and receives input and advice from the Council to help ensure the codes are appropriate for Alberta.
Alberta regulations enable ‘timely code adoption’ which brings national or international code changes into force for one year after their publication. This provides predictability so that industry, municipalities, and other sectors (such as educational institutions) can confidently plan and prepare for new code changes.
