Neat to Know: February 26, 2026

Your weekly roundup of City news, updates, and other important information.

Watch for your Property Assessment Notice in the mail/inbox starting February 27

Collecting residential and non-residential property taxes is one of the various ways the City of Medicine Hat funds municipal services. Your property assessment is used to determine your share of the total property taxes collected.

If you have questions or concerns about your assessment, please be sure to call or visit us before considering filing a formal complaint. We’ll work together to achieve mutual understanding. If that is not successful, you may file an appeal to the Assessment Review Board on or before May 6, 2026.

Bonus!

You can even choose to have online access to your assessment and tax notices and have them delivered directly to your email! Go to medicinehat.ca/etax to create an account and select eBilling before April 22 (Earth Day) for a chance to win a $500 City of Medicine Hat gift card.

WestJet announcement

We were disappointed to hear of WestJet’s decision to end air service in Medicine Hat and Lethbridge, undoubtedly a loss for visitors, residents and businesses in the region. We will continue all efforts to attract a new carrier at YXH, and continuing to maintain the airfield to service the vast array of other regular flight activities.

Residents may be interested to know that WestJet’s commercial service accounted for less than 2% of the total aircraft movements on our tarmac.

Medicine Hat Regional Airport was one of Canada’s fastestgrowing airports in 2025. It remains a critical lifeline for southeastern Alberta, enabling high‑volume air ambulance missions that provide reliable, year‑round lifesaving access. There are, on average, 1,000 medevac trips each year. It also supports pilot skills development and youth training programs to approximately 120 active flight training students at any given time that help build a strong, longterm aviation workforce.

Rooted in Action: Volunteerism Learning Series

Learning to Unlearn Volunteerism
Tuesday, Mar. 3 | 9:30 a.m. to 12 p.m. | Esplanade

The final session in our popular volunteerism learning series is just around the corner!

The Rooted in Action series is facilitated by Volunteer Alberta. It is a free opportunity for all volunteer-utilizing organizations in the community looking for resources to boost their capacity to engage and benefit from a strong volunteer base.

We're excited to welcome Miki Stricker-Talbot, Executive Director of Volunteer Alberta, to lead the fifth and final session in-person at the Esplanade!

This learning session will examine today's fast-changing world when it comes to volunteerism. It will provide the ability to (un)learn outdated habits and embrace new ways of thinking which has become essential to attracting, recruiting, retaining and recognizing volunteers. This may transform how we use volunteerism as an important resource to strengthen organizations in our community.

If you missed any previous sessions, no worries! Each session provides tremendous individual value. If you only have time to attend even just the final of five sessions, it will benefit your organization.

Register and learn more on the event page at Tixx.ca.

Did you know there are 29,110 property tax accounts in Medicine Hat? In today’s edition of Municipal Matters, City assessor Sue Sterkenburg talks about how property assessment is the method to distribute the City’s tax revenue requirement among those accounts.
