Neat to Know: March 26, 2026
Your weekly roundup of City news, updates, and other important information.
There is a lot that’s new this week and coming up around the City of Medicine Hat!
Street Sweeping
We’ve set our annual spring street sweeping program schedule for 2026! The program removes sanding materials and debris that have accumulated on roads and along sidewalks and boulevards during the winter months.
The annual street sweeping program starts on Monday, March 30.
Read our news release for the full schedule and to learn more about the program.
Co-op Place Express returns
The Co-op Place Express is back for all home games in the Medicine Hat Tigers’ 2026 Western Hockey League playoff run.
The popular Medicine Hat Transit shuttle service provides round-trip travel for Tigers playoff games for just $5, making it as easy and pleasant as possible to get to and from the game.
Read our news release to learn more about the service and how to get your pass secured for the first two games of the Tigers’ opening-round series on Friday and Saturday!
Parking for Tigers playoff games
With Co-op Place set to be packed for each home game in the Tigers’ playoff run, we’re also here to help those who choose to drive there.
If you aren’t able to park in any of the lots at Co-op Place, here’s what you need to know ahead of Game 1, and for every home game in what we hope is another long playoff run!
Overflow parking
Overflow parking has been approved at the following partner locations nearby:
- Kal Tire – Perimeter parking only (dirt lot permitted at your discretion)
- Farm Credit Canada/Cardinal Energy/CNRL – Perimeter only (no access beyond rear fence line)

Please follow all posted signage and respect restricted areas and private property (vacant lots, storm ponds, etc.).
On-street parking
On-street parking is still permitted on Box Springs Way and Box Springs Street during playoffs. Please do not park in front of hydrants or near intersections.
However, no parking is permitted on Box Springs Link or Box Springs Road (including the west side ditch) for pedestrian and motorist safety.
Litter Blitz launches
Our annual Litter Blitz campaign is now underway. The 2026 edition of the event runs from Thursday, March 26 to Saturday, April 18.
The Litter Blitz aims to foster a collaborative approach to enhancing the natural beauty in Medicine Hat, empowering residents to join the City in its spring cleanup of trash from parks and public green spaces.
Read our news release to learn more about the event, including how to participate, and an appreciation barbecue put on by our Parks and Recreation team.
LED upgrades at City facilities
We completed new energy‑efficient lighting upgrades at two local facilities this week, supported through the Municipal Climate Change Action Centre’s (MCCAC) Community Energy Conservation program and funded by the Government of Alberta.
The latest round of work focused on replacing aging and high‑consumption lighting at Medalta Potteries and the South Ridge Recreation Centre (YMCA). With a contribution of $69,976 from the MCCAC, the City upgraded a combined 312 fixtures and retrofitted 408 fluorescent tubes with LED technology.
Read our news release to learn more about these upgrades.
Organic waste collection season is approaching!
Seasonal collection of organic yard waste materials starts on Monday, April 6! Organic waste collection occurs on the same day as household waste and recycling collection.
Download the Recycle Coach App or refer to medicinehat.ca/collectionschedule to determine your first scheduled organic waste collection day.
Visit our Yard Waste page to check out some helpful tips on how to ensure your organic waste gets successfully picked up. You can also request a yard waste cart on this page, or by contacting our Environmental Utilities team at 403-529-8176 or eu@medicinehat.ca.
Annual elm pruning ban
The annual elm pruning ban begins Wednesday, April 1, so make sure you get any elm pruning done by March 31! The pruning ban lasts from April 1 to September 30 annually to protect against the spread of Dutch Elm Disease.
The ban restricts pruning during the active season of elm bark beetles, which carry the disease. The beetles are attracted to fresh wounds (cuts) on elm trees, and a lack of pruning reduces the number of wounds they can access.
Dutch elm disease (DED) is a fatal fungus that can affect all elm species in Alberta. The fungus clogs the elm tree’s water conducting system and will cause the tree to die quite quickly, usually within one or two seasons. Understanding how to spot symptoms or to understand its effect is important to help prevent its spread.
If you see signs of DED in your elm tree – wilting leaves in summer, branch dieback, brown streaks under the bark, please contact:
- Medicine Hat DED hotline: 403-529-8333 “Option 6” (Parks and Recreation office)
- STOPDED hotline: 1-877-837-ELMS (3567)
- Learn more about DED on the Government of Alberta’s website
Good Friday hours
And don't forget, hours and services at various City of Medicine Hat facilities will be affected by the Good Friday statutory holiday coming up on Friday, April 3.
Visit our holiday hours page to view what to expect for City facilities, Medicine Hat Transit, and Waste Collection on Good Friday.
