Council Swearing In Ceremony
On Monday, incumbent Mayor Linnsie Clark and eight new Councillors were sworn into office at the inaugural meeting of the 2025-2029 Medicine Hat City Council. Councillors Ted Clugston, Bill Cocks, Brian Varga have experience around the horseshoe from previous Council terms, while Yusuf Mohammed, Stuart Young, Chris Hellman, Cheryl Phaff and Dan Reynish took their chairs in office for the first time.
Council Appointments
Mayor Clark announced Committee appointments for each Council Member to various standing committees.
Inaugural Mayoral Address
To close the evening, Mayor Clark provided her inaugural address for the new City Council term.
In her address, Mayor Clark highlighted the vital role of trust - “the machinery humming quietly underneath everything we do” - as the foundation of community and civilization. She noted that civic engagement is declining, economic inequality is growing, and social media often distorts real human interaction, contributing to polarization and distrust in governments. To rebuild this trust, she emphasized transparency, local decision-making, institutional memory, responsible use of digital platforms, and strengthening our shared community stories and traditions. She also underscored the importance of principle-based leadership, noting that by keeping our promises, communities can restore cooperation, justice, and a shared sense of civic responsibility.

(Report a) problem solved
Though our staff does their best to keep an eye on all our infrastructure around the city, we unfortunately can’t be monitoring everything at once – especially after hours and on weekends.
That’s why we appreciate the help from residents who happen to notice a street light outage, traffic light issue, broken swing on a playground, a sprinkler stuck on in a park in summer, or whatever you may see.
To ensure these get dealt with as soon as possible, we encourage you to use our Report a Problem page on our website.
You can submit a ticket through the Report a Problem portal and keep track of the service request online or call one of the Report a Problem numbers to reach our staff in real time between the hours of 8 a.m. and 4 p.m., Monday to Friday.
Thank you for continuing to bring these matters to our attention so we can keep our community in good shape.

Mayor’s Ceremonial Chain of Office
Medicine Hat’s official chain of office was presented to Mayor C. J. (Chuck) Meagher by Mayor Leonard C. Jones of Moncton, New Brunswick as that City’s gift to Medicine Hat on Friday, June 7, 1968. On the same date a civic dinner was held at the Westerner in honour of the visit of Mayor Jones and several of his Aldermen. Because Moncton was Medicine Hat’s Canadian Centennial twin sister City, the Chain of Office was patterned after that of Moncton’s.
Mayor Linnsie Clark may wear the Ceremonial Chain of Office on occasion at her discretion.
