This is our first edition of Neat to Know since we switched to a new website and e-notification system, so it may look a bit different than you’re used to. We’ll continue to refine the way the newsletter looks both in your inbox and on our website in the coming editions, and we’d love to hear your feedback. Email us at webmaster@medicinehat.ca if you have anything to share.

City continuing operation of Animal Pound Services

We have made the decision to continue operating animal pound services permanently.

After assuming temporary operation in June, we issued a request for proposals (RFP) to seek a suitable operator. We were unable to find an operator that met the requirements of the operation, and the RFP was cancelled.

The public can expect to see the same standards of care for animals in the facility. And, we will maintain partnership opportunities with groups like the Medicine Hat SPCA, vet clinic(s), and other animal services (grooming, daycare, cremation, etc.), for the provision of services.

Crestwood Pool update

The pool at Crestwood Recreation Centre remains closed due to a mechanical issue, which forced its closure on September 5. The fitness centre remains open and fully operational.

Extended season at Hill Pool

In a corresponding move, Hill Pool will be staying open a little bit longer! It will now be open from September 15-19 for Aquafit and lane swimming.

Visit our Program Schedules page to view the updated schedule.

Flags at half-mast – National Firefighter’s Memorial Day

Flags at all City facilities will be lowered to half-mast from late Friday, September 12 until the morning of Monday, September 15 to remember the firefighters who have lost their lives in the line of duty.

National Firefighter's Memorial Day is a time to commemorate the firefighters who courageously serve our community and country. These brave individuals have committed to protect our communities from fire and other emergencies and put their lives on the line for us. We are grateful for their service.

Municipal Matters – Facilities for the Future

Director of Parks and Recreation, James Will, had the opportunity to author our most recent edition of Municipal Matters in the Medicine Hat News, out today.

In his article, James talks about the launch of public engagement efforts for the potential development of a south side destination outdoor pool and construction of sports fields in Brier Run.

It’s been a multi-year effort to get to this point, and an upcoming survey and in-person events will ensure residents are a key part of the decision-making process.

This is more than just a project—it's a reflection of our community’s values, dreams, and collective voice. Hatters’ input is essential as we build something remarkable—together.

3...2...1... Blast-off: Refreshed City website launches

Earlier this week, we launched our refreshed City of Medicine Hat website! The update brings a modern, user-friendly experience to our community.

Why the refresh was necessary
Our previous content management system (CMS) was approaching end-of-life and would no longer be supported after September 2025.

A peak behind the curtain
With over 3000 pages, moving the entire website from one system to another is a major task. Automated tools helped transfer content, however staff still reviewed each page one-by-one to ensure a smooth transition.

Still fine-tuning
As with any technology project, some quirks and broken have links popped up. Staff are working to resolve these and keep the site running smoothly.

If you notice any issues, please email us at webmaster@medicinehat.ca
