Portion of Southview Drive SE closed starting September 6
Medicine Hat – A small portion of Southview Drive SE between Dunmore Road SE and 13 Avenue SE will be closed starting Sept. 6 for a major infrastructure renewal project to replace a low-pressure gas line in Medicine Hat’s Norwood area. The closure is expected to last four to six weeks.
The City maintains a comprehensive asset management plan that helps inform capital spending decisions in each budget cycle. The 2022 Norwood gas main renewal project will replace underground gas piping in yards, lanes and streets to maintain reliable natural gas service in the area, as well as repair all streets, lanes, concrete and asphalt areas disturbed by the installation.
The bulk of the work, including excavation in streets and back lanes, occurs on local roads where residents and businesses have been personally notified. However, a portion of the work will occur on the high-traffic collector on Southview Drive SE and affect more of the travelling public which will be detoured using Park Meadows Drive SE.
Motorists are able to access all businesses along Southview Drive SE as follows:
- Subway, Taco Time and Stewart Optical are accessible from the east off of Dunmore Road SE.
- All businesses west of and including BGSA and Park Meadows Dental are accessible from the west from 13 Avenue SE.

Pedestrian access will be maintained through the duration of the project but may be directed around the active work zone with signage.
Motorists are reminded to obey all posted signs and detours and use caution in the construction area.
The City of Medicine Hat thanks residents for their patience and understanding during the construction of this rehabilitation project which ensures safe and reliable infrastructure for years to come.
