Public hearing to rezone proposed shelter site cancelled
Medicine Hat – On August 28, the City announced that after evaluating several properties, The Mustard Seed and the City of Medicine Hat had agreed to explore 2055 Saamis Drive NW as a potential location for emergency shelter services.
Since that time, both the City and The Mustard Seed have received numerous inquiries and concerns related to the appropriateness of this site, both for users and for surrounding properties and businesses. To allow both parties time to further review and respond to concerns, The Mustard Seed has withdrawn the application to rezone the property. As such, the public hearing scheduled for the September 29, 2025 City Council meeting is cancelled.
During the review process, the parties – including the Province of Alberta – will also take the opportunity to continue exploring other options for a permanent shelter location. As finding a shelter location that balances the needs and desires of all stakeholders is challenging, the parties are open to suggestions from community members on where to locate this important community service. Community members that have a suggestion for a suitable site can visit the City’s shelter services information page at https://www.medicinehat.ca/community-support-culture-safety/community-support/community-shelters/ and use the form to submit their thoughts.
While the need to find a location remains a priority, it’s important to take the time to hear from the community to ensure the best possible solution. The City appreciates the Mustard Seed’s decision to withdraw the application to allow time to review and respond to concerns, and to continue working together to determine a suitable location.
With the winter months nearing, the City of Medicine Hat will work closely with The Mustard Seed and Medicine Hat Community Housing Society to ensure interim plans are in place to support those in need during the cold weather months.
The City appreciates the community’s patience while efforts continue to address this complex issue.
