Re-opening the Veiner Centre: Better Together

Medicine Hat - The Veiner Centre will reopen its doors on Monday, November 9, 2020, reconnecting its members through limited activities while keeping health and safety a priority.




The Centre will operate under reduced hours, from 9:00 am – 3:00 pm, Monday to Friday. Fitness Classes will start November 16. In-person registration will be available from November 9-13.The Bistro will be open from 10:00 am – 2:00 pm for beverages Lunch will not be available at this time.




Veiner Centre staff will resume providing activities to assist older adults maintain their physical, mental, emotional and social health. Activities for November will include: book club, quilting/sewing/crafts, snooker/pool, shuffleboard, table tennis, water colour studio, and fitness classes. The November class schedule and fees will be available on the City website, as well as on social media. Memberships will be free for the months of November and December.




“We are thrilled to have the Veiner Centre open again, and cannot wait to see our members back doing the activities they enjoy,” says Shona Dickie, Superintendent of Community Support Services. “We are making every effort to provide activities to best serve our members in a manner that complies with Alberta guidelines, while providing opportunities for people to stay connected and active in our community.”



A number of health and safety measures have been implemented to align with recommendations set by the Government of Alberta. The Veiner Centre will reopen in stages so staff are able to evaluate success and plan for how to safely incorporate more services and programs in the future. The first stage includes a limited opening and all person entering the building will be asked to complete a self-assessment checklist. In addition, non-medical masks will be available for patrons, as well as hand sanitizer.




“Safety and prevention is our number one priority,” Dickie added. “We will continue to evaluate the ability to operate in a way which is safe for volunteers and patrons. We ask that anyone who is feeling sick or unwell to please stay home.”
