Recent weather sparks trail safety reminder
Medicine Hat – The City of Medicine Hat is advising residents of the potential for slippery sections of trail due to several recent freeze-thaw cycles and light snowfalls, as well as today’s freezing rain.
City crews are actively performing snow clearing and traction control measures. However, despite these efforts, ice may still form in certain areas of the trail system.
With another warm stretch of daytime highs above freezing anticipated over the holiday break, the City would like to share winter safety tips for those looking to enjoy the trails this season:
- Exercise caution: Be extra vigilant when walking, jogging, or cycling on the trails. Look out for icy patches and proceed with care. Read and obey all signs regarding trails closures. Remember, “If it looks like ice, don’t roll the dice!”
- Wear appropriate footwear: Ensure footwear has good traction to help prevent slips and falls
- Use handrails: These provide added support where available, especially on inclines, declines
- Stay on designated paths: Avoid uncleared paths; these are more likely to be icy and unsafe
- Slow down: Reduce your speed to maintain better control and reaction time
- Stay informed: Check local weather and trail conditions or closures before heading out
Residents who encounter unsafe conditions on trails that receive snow removal are asked to report them to the Parks and Recreation department at 403-529-8333 or submit a ticket through the City’s Report a Problem portal.
