Retrospective exhibition celebrates 75 years with The Hat Art Club

Medicine Hat – The Esplanade Arts & Heritage Centre is proud to present The Hat Art Club 75 Years Retrospective, on now until March 4, 2022.

This year marks the 75 year anniversary of the Hat Art Club. Since its inception in 1946, the Hat Art Club has been nurturing the development of visual artists in Medicine Hat through educational workshops, studio space, group exhibitions and experiences as well as member scholarships.

The Hat Art Club: A 75 Year Retrospective showcases works from past and present Hat Art Club members and instructors. 75 works will be on exhibit from current members such as Fran Lauzon, Dale Beaven, Aldof Erdman and Dawn Knowles, as well as past members and instructors, including Helen Beny Gibson, Allan Jensen, Joan Van Belkum and Gary Newton.

The exhibit features a variety of mediums, such as a hand-woven textile piece titled English Garden, by Nancy Ruth Sissons, a water colour painting titled Medalta Crocks, by Joyce Yamamoto, and an oil on Masonite from 1947 by Luke Lindoe. These works, as well as the 72 others demonstrate the thriving creative community Medicine Hat was and continues to be.

“The Hat Art Club has been instrumental in developing the creative community Medicine Hat is today, and this exhibition is a glimpse into the impact it had and still has,” said Dan Meller, Esplanade Gallery assistant.

The exhibition is co-curated by current Hat Art Club member Aurelia Archibald, Dan Meller, Esplanade Gallery assistant and Xanthe Isbister, Director/Curator, Esplanade Galleries and Collections. Special thanks to Joanne Ellis, Esplanade Volunteer Coordinator and Bev Duke, President of the Hat Art Club.

Admission to the galleries is Pay What You Will, which means patrons decide what they pay after their visit.

Hours of operations are Tuesday to Friday, Noon to 5 p.m.
