Sewer lining restricts traffic on Sixth Avenue SE downtown on Monday, Sept. 12

Medicine Hat – The 200 block of Sixth Avenue SE downtown (between Second Street SE and Third Street SE) will be reduced to single-lane traffic in both directions between 6 a.m. and noon on Monday, Sept. 12 for sewer lining.

Furthermore, part of the intersection at Sixth Avenue SE and Second Street SE will be closed to access the manhole, restricting westbound traffic on Second Street SE into the right-hand lane though the intersection. This includes traffic turning left (west) from Sixth Street SE onto Second Street SE.

Existing concrete sewer infrastructure has experienced degradation from high sulphate levels. The repair requires draining and cleaning the existing pipe, inserting an epoxy liner through the sewer system between two manholes, and then curing it in place with steam. The technology allows full restoration of the sewer trunk without having to excavate and expose the piping.

Water and sewer services in the area will remain operational and pedestrian traffic will not be affected.

Motorists are advised to plan routes in advance and to follow signage and speed reductions to ensure the safety of workers and the public.

The City of Medicine Hat would like to thank residents for their continued patience and understanding as the necessary upgrades are completed to ensure safe and reliable infrastructure for years to come.
