What to know: Saamis Heights Special Use Access
Medicine Hat – The City of Medicine Hat is advising residents on how to use the Saamis Heights Special Use Access (SUA) if it is activated. The SUA is located where the multi-use trail meets South Ridge Drive SE at the south perimeter of the neighbourhood. The access will accommodate two-way traffic between South Ridge Drive SE and the Saamis Heights community.
The ‘emergency vehicle only’ access was widened in 2023 to accommodate temporary vehicle use when the primary access at the intersection of South Ridge Drive SE and Sierra Boulevard SW is restricted or closed. Until the Cimarron lands south of Saamis Heights are developed and a full second access is established, the City is supporting the area with this two-way SUA.
The SUA will only be opened during extended restrictions at the primary access, as determined by emergency responders. It will be opened for select circumstances including motor vehicle collisions, fire or emergency response, public safety incidents, or short-duration construction activities.
Once activated, the following measures will be used to assist residents with navigating the Saamis Heights SUA:
- Directional signage will be placed to guide motorists
- The route will be cleared of obstructions before public use
- Traffic control may be in place to ensure safe access
Motorists must follow posted instructions and drive cautiously when using the Saamis Heights SUA. Residents will be notified through the City of Medicine Hat’s social media channels and its website when the Special Use Access is activated. Follow-up updates will be provided when it is closed after normal traffic flow resumes at the primary access point on Sierra Boulevard SW.
