Trade Permits

Trades permits are permits relating to specific skilled trades (electrical, plumbing, gas or mechanical) which are required in building and renovation projects.

Trade Permits are for professionals

For a company to be issued trades permits, it must either have a Business License or be associated with a Licensed Contractor.

 

 

 

An electrical permit is required for installing or modifying electrical systems, including moving lights or outlets.

An electrical permit is not required for the replacement of electrical equipment (conditions apply - contact us for details)

A plumbing permit is required for installing or modifying plumbing systems, including new bathroom fixtures.

A plumbing permit is not required to install plumbing fixtures in a single family dwelling if the rough-in piping has been completed under another permit.

A gas permit is required for installing or modifying a gas furnace, gas fireplace, gas range or any other gas related work.

A gas permit is not required to replace a gas furnace, water heater, gas range or laundry dryer if:

  • it is located in a single family dwelling, and
  • there is no design change in any gas piping or venting system

A mechanical permit is required for installing or modifying heating, ventilating and air conditioning (HVAC) systems.

Extend a permit

If you have already received a City permit for building, plumbing, electrical, gas or HVAC work, but are not able to complete the work during the time period, you may apply online for an extension of your permit.

  • You cannot extend a permit that has already expired.
  • You cannot extend a permit more than once.
  • You cannot extend a permit more than one year beyond the original expiration date.

Book an inspection

Generally, your project will require a rough-in and a final inspection for each building and trades permit, though additional inspections may be required. See more below:

Do it yourself

Homeowners Trade Permit is authorization from The City to perform a limited scope of electrical, plumbing, gas or HVAC work.
