3 Street SE construction progresses, maintains project timelines
Medicine Hat – An upcoming shift in construction zones on the 3 Street SE Downtown Utility and Surface Upgrades project will increase project efficiency and maintain project timelines.
Starting this weekend, the intersection of 3 Street SE and 6 Avenue SE will temporarily re-open to motorists as the 500 block of 3 Street SE closes for construction. This will separate work zones on the 500 and 600 blocks of 3 Street SE.
Separating these work zones aims to eliminate overlap between infrastructure replacement and road construction, which involve separate crews. This move allows work to progress seven days per week, weather permitting, and ensures the project continues to remain on schedule.
A temporary driving surface on 6 Avenue SE will allow motorists another access point to downtown during this project. Once construction on the 600 block of 3 Street SE is complete, the remainder of work on the intersection will be incorporated into the 500 block in the final stretch of 2024 construction on the 3 Street SE Downtown Utility and Surface Upgrades project.
Downtown businesses remain open during this project. Residents can find a list of downtown parking options while accessing these businesses at: medicinehat.ca/downtownparking
The purpose of the 3 Street SE Downtown Utility and Surface Upgrades project has been to upgrade water and sewer systems which are over 100 years old. This will increase the reliability and quality of our utility infrastructure in the downtown core. The project also includes replacement and enhancement of sidewalks and curbs, and the addition of new street furniture, planters, trees and signage.
