Elephant’s feet crossing installation continues

Medicine Hat – The City of Medicine Hat will continue to convert standard trail crossings into elephant’s feet crossings as part of its 2025 construction efforts. This initiative is part of the City’s ongoing commitment to expand and support active transportation within the city.

Elephant’s feet crossings are marked by dashed white lines made up of white squares. These markings indicate that cyclists can remain on their bikes while crossing the road, unlike standard crosswalks where they must dismount and walk their bike across. While cyclists and pedestrians have the right-of-way at these crossings, it is important that they still exercise caution before crossing the street.

Motorists will notice one of several signage options posted to indicate an elephant’s feet crossing is ahead:

Converting select crossings into elephant’s feet enhances safety and visibility for users of the City’s 190-kilometre-long Trail Network. Overall, when used properly, these crossings improve connectivity for cyclists and pedestrians while supporting efficient traffic flow for motorists.

Some crossings have already been converted into elephant’s feet crossings as part of previous and ongoing transportation infrastructure projects. Currently there are 12 elephant's feet crossings in Medicine Hat:

The map will be updated after the construction season to reflect the newest locations. The City will continue this initiative within projects in 2026 and beyond.
