Medicine Hat selected as host city for 2023 Pickleball Canada Regionals
Medicine Hat – On Dec. 2, Pickleball Canada announced that the Medicine Hat Pickleball Club (MHPC) and the community of Medicine Hat were selected to host the 2023 Pickleball Canada Western Regional Championship.
From July 6 to 9, 2023 more than 500 players from across British Columbia, Alberta, Saskatchewan, and Manitoba are expected to compete for the coveted title of the Western Region’s best pickleball athletes.
“The MHPC cannot wait to showcase our new 20-court facility, our city, our club members, and our outstanding volunteers to the Western Canadian Pickleball community,” says Tournament Director, Brenda Lea MacPhail. “Our past tournament successes have been noted by all that have attended over the years, and we hope to continue that legacy in 2023 making this event a very memorable one for all.”
The new South Country Co-op Pickleball Courts were made possible through the 2020 Municipal Stimulus Program (MSP), a provincial program announced in response to the COVID-19 pandemic. Funding was allocated per capita, providing the City of Medicine Hat with a maximum contribution of $7.5 million of which $2 million supported the development of the 20-court pickleball facility.
“We are very excited and honoured to have Medicine Hat chosen as the host community for the Pickleball Canada Western Regional Championship.” says Mayor Linnsie Clark. “This would not be possible without the hard work, enthusiasm, and advocacy of the Medicine Hat Pickleball Club. Events such as these are a great example of what can happen when communities work together towards a common goal.”

The City of Medicine Hat thanks the Government of Alberta for supporting this project through the Municipal Stimulus Program, developed in response to the COVID-19 pandemic, to stimulate the economy through job growth and red tape reduction. Funding was allocated per capita, providing Medicine Hat a maximum contribution of $7.5 million. The program identified extensive eligibility criteria, including no ongoing operational costs (creating future burden on tax rates), no existing budget commitment (projects that would not go forward in the absence of support through the stimulus program), commencement of construction by 2021 and expending all grant funds by December 31, 2021.
