Neat to Know: February 28, 2024

Speech bubbles that say "Neat to Know"

Please enjoy this week's edition of Neat to Know, a roundup of City news, updates, and other important information. You can expect to see the week's most interesting content and even some that may have not been delivered through our regular channels.

Why not use the Medicine Hat Arena?

With our ear to the ground, we hear our community's desire to find solutions surrounding housing and homelessness and we are so appreciative of your care and concern for our fellow community members.

One idea that is often suggested is to utilize the vacant Medicine Hat Arena building in times of need. While we agree it is important to find a practical solution, unfortunately, the former Medicine Hat Arena is not a viable option. With no power or other utilities, the building is being maintained as a structure only and does not meet condition standards that are required to accommodate occupancy.

The City of Medicine Hat continues to play a supporting role in the Province's efforts in developing solutions to address housing challenges. We encourage you to continue to show care and compassion in this community conversation.

Apply for a community microgrant

Let us help you foster connections in your community through a microgrant of up to $500. Here's how we helped in 2023:

  • 26 events
  • $10,300 contributed
  • 1,060 participants
  • 77 volunteers
  • 238 volunteer-hours

"It was especially gratifying to see neighbours gather that have lived on the street for five or more years who had never met before."

"One thing that was special was seeing families walk to our street with their wagons full of chairs and coolers. There’s not many family events that we can walk to."

Do you have an idea for an event in the community or your neighbourhood? Apply today.

Watch for your property assessment notice

Property assessment notices will be mailed February 28 and will soon hit your mailbox. The assessed value of property is the basis for what property owners pay in municipal taxes, provincial education taxes and the Cypress View Foundation levy.

It is really important to review the assessed value of your property so that any concerns or discrepancies can be addressed prior to the appeal deadline of May 7, 2024.
