Who noticed the huge logo on our Neat to Know email last week?

Last Monday our website transitioned to a new platform (due to older technology retiring). We are working hard to resolve the issues that have come with the transition (broken links, access to forms, glitches, and odd email formats). We appreciate your patience as we adapt to this new system. We should have things up and running better than ever soon.

We’ll continue to refine the way the newsletter looks both in your inbox and on our website in the coming editions, and we’d love to hear your feedback. Email us at webmaster@medicinehat.ca if you have anything to share.

Help shape recreation in Medicine Hat

Take the survey before Sunday

The City of Medicine Hat wants to hear your feedback on the potential development of a Southside Outdoor Aquatics Centre and Brier Run Sports Field. Complete a 10-minute survey before Sunday, September 21, 2025, to ensure you are part of the decision-making process.

Your feedback will help City Council and staff better understand resident perspectives on funding, locations, amenities, and priorities for the potential development of these new recreational facilities.

Organic waste embraced

We hosted our third-and-final free compost giveaway this past Saturday, as part of our ongoing commitment to environmental stewardship and community engagement.

We handed out 36,415 kilograms of our high-quality SureGrow compost to over 700 residents across three Saturday events this year! That’s the weight of six elephants!

We averaged 12,138 kg of compost given away each event in 2025 – an increase of over 21% compared to our 2024 average (10,000 kg).

With such positive feedback from residents who attended, we look forward to hosting another three events in 2026. Stay tuned for those dates!

And don’t forget, bulk compost is available for sale at the Waste Management Facility year-round for $30/Tonne.

What is bullet voting?

When we pushed ‘send’ on this edition of Neat to Know, there were 6 candidates running for Mayor, 37 for Councillor, 8 for the Catholic Board of Education and 11 for the Public School Division, and there’s still four days until nomination deadline.

In an at-large election where multiple candidates are elected, it's often a good idea to vote only for the candidates you truly believe in, a strategy known as bullet voting, rather than using all your available votes.

When votes are spread between so many people, even the slightest margin may separate a candidate from being elected or just missing out. If your goal is to maximize the chances of your top candidate winning, and you're indifferent or opposed to the others, bullet voting can be an effective approach.

By casting a vote only for your top choice(s), you avoid boosting the vote totals of other candidates who might compete with or even defeat your favourite. In contrast, voting for multiple candidates spreads your influence across them. If some of those candidates are less aligned with your values, you might unintentionally help them win over someone you strongly support.

Medicine Hat’s election is Monday, October 20. Learn all about it at medicinehat.ca/election.
