Review of swimming waitlist, capacity underway ahead of spring registration
Medicine Hat – City staff continue to review additional waitlist numbers ahead of the spring registration, taking place later this month.
In December, the city announced an extended registration period to allow parents and/or guardians to register their children for the preferred swimming lesson dates and times.
“By extending the waitlist period, we saw an additional 774 registrations. Parents were able to identify multiple classes that were ideal, based on the dates and times available,” said Scott Richter, Manager of Business and Innovation and the interim Recreation and Leisure Manager for the Parks & Recreation department. “The majority of parents and guardians are looking to book their kids in our Preschool 3 class, in Swim Kids 1 and Swim Kids 2 classes.”
Based on the current demand and the ability to on-board more aquatic instructors, staff were able to offer two additional Swim Kids 1 classes beginning this spring. These classes were made available to the children currently on the waitlist and have since been filled, which was the intention of opening up the waitlist spots late last year.
The City thanks everyone who took the time to put themselves on waitlist, ensuring staff have accurate data to work with when planning for future registration periods. We encourage parents and guardians to continue signing up for waitlist classes as we continue planning for future registrations.
“We will continue to look at options and strategies to increase swim lessons as we plan for the summer and fall,” Richter added. “This includes city programs, as well as working with the YMCA and the Town of Redcliff.”
