Big Marble Go Centre receives sensory-inclusive certification

The City of Medicine Hat is pleased to announce that Big Marble Go Centre has earned KultureCity® Sensory Inclusive™ Certification, making it the first recreation centre in Alberta to receive the designation.

KultureCity® is a leading non-profit organization dedicated to promoting inclusivity and accessibility for individuals with sensory needs. Their Sensory Inclusive™ program has been widely embraced by venues, stadiums, and cultural institutions across Canada and around the world. Two other City facilities, Co-op Place and the Esplanade Arts & Heritage Centre, became the first two entertainment venues in Alberta to earn this certification in February 2025.

To become certified, Big Marble Go Centre staff received training developed by leading medical and neurodivergent professionals on how to recognize guests with sensory needs, and how to handle a sensory overload situation. Currently, 85 staff members have received training. Training opportunities will continue to be offered to ensure that number continually grows.

The certification helps prepare Big Marble Go Centre staff to better assist guests with sensory sensitivities when they arrive at this upbeat, popular facility. It helps these guests have the most comfortable and accommodating experience possible. The timing of this certification was vital, with the facility set to host a significant number of participants and patrons for the 2026 Special Olympics Canada Summer Games from August 11 to 15.

“Big Marble Go Centre welcomes thousands of guests each year, including many who experience sensory challenges, and we see this achievement as an important step toward creating a more inclusive and accessible environment for everyone,” said William Percy, Interim Manager of Recreation with the City of Medicine Hat. “We are proud to continue enhancing our programs, services, and spaces to ensure all guests feel welcomed, supported, and able to enjoy everything our facility has to offer.”

Sensory bags are now available to borrow from the customer service desk. These bags are equipped with noise canceling headphones, fidget tools, verbal cue cards, and weighted lap pads for all visitors who may feel overwhelmed by the environment.

Prior to visiting Big Marble Go Centre, families can download the free KultureCity® App to view what sensory features are available and where they can access them. Also on the App is the Social Story, which will provide a preview of what to expect when visiting the facility.
