City implementing precautions due to high river flow
The City is taking precautionary measures in response to increased river flow rates. These measures include the immediate temporary, closure of Police Point Park, boat launches, and several low-lying river pathways. These closures are being implemented out of an abundance of caution, and there is no anticipated risk of overland flooding or property damage.
Closures
-
Police Point Park
-
Echo Dale Regional Park Campground
-
All boat launches: Strathcona Island Park, Echo Dale Regional Park, and Fire Station No. 1
-
Low-lying trails along the river, including but not limited to Strathcona Island Park, Harlow neighbourhood, Riverside neighbourhood, and Echo Dale Regional Park
City crews are actively installing barricades and signage in affected areas. Residents are asked to stay clear of work zones, obey all closures, and avoid low-lying trails along the river. The City advises residents to keep a safe distance from the river, as fast-moving water and saturated banks can create hazardous conditions.
The current river flow rate is approximately 780 cubic meters per second and is expected to rise over the coming days. While river levels are elevated, they remain well below the 5,200 cubic meters per second experienced during the 2013 flood. Local creeks, including Seven Persons Creek and Ross Creek, remain stable. There is no anticipated risk to the Water Treatment Plant, Waste Water Treatment Plant, or pump stations.
Current conditions are anticipated to return to normal by the middle of next week. City departments continue to monitor conditions closely and are working in coordination with the Alberta River Forecasting Centre.
Updates will be provided if conditions change. For more information on river advisories, flow rates, and projections visit rivers.alberta.ca
