City phasing removal of high river flow precautions

The City of Medicine Hat has begun phasing the removal of high river flow precautions, which had been in place since June 30. The decision has been made now that the South Saskatchewan River has returned to a safe level. The river peaked at 6.04 metres with a flow rate of 1,810 cubic metres per second late last week.

Effective immediately, all sections of affected low lying trails along the river are open. Parks and Recreation staff have worked to remove any sediment and debris which had built up during peak river flows.

The boat launches at Strathcona Island Park, Echo Dale Regional Park, and Fire Station No. 1 are scheduled to re-open Friday, July 17. These locations require more significant assessment and cleanup efforts to ensure they can be safely used to load and unload watercraft.

Residents are reminded to continue to proceed with caution along the river, as banks may remain soft and conditions can change.

The City of Medicine Hat thanks residents for their understanding and cooperation throughout these precautionary measures.
