City responds to tragic incident at Echo Dale

The City of Medicine Hat is deeply saddened to confirm that a serious incident occurred at Echo Dale Regional Park, resulting in the death of a child.

Our thoughts and heartfelt condolences are with the child’s family, friends, and all those affected by this tragic loss. Out of respect for the family’s privacy, no further details will be released.

In response to this incident, all City-operated pools and aquatic facilities will be closed effective immediately and will remain closed until further notice. This pause will allow for a thorough review, and to provide support to those impacted.

We recognize the profound effect this tragedy will have on our community, including students, families, and City staff. Support resources are being made available to aquatic staff, first responders, and others who may need assistance during this difficult time. We have reached out to community partners and local school divisions to ensure appropriate supports are accessible to young people and families.

“Our heartfelt condolences are with the child’s family, friends, and all those affected by this tragic loss,” said Joe Hutter, Interim City Manager. “I can’t begin to imagine the grief this family is experiencing.”

The safety and wellbeing of our residents and employees is our highest priority. We are working with authorities and are committed to reviewing this incident and will provide updates related to the review as more information becomes available. Updates on facility reopenings will be provided once confirmed.

We ask the community to keep the family and all those impacted in their thoughts during this incredibly difficult time.

  • Kinsman Aquatic Park at Big Marble Go Centre
  • Hill and Strathcona pools
