City to recognize National Day of Mourning
The City of Medicine Hat will recognize the National Day of Mourning on Tuesday, April 28. The observance remembers workers whose lives were lost in the workplace and recognizes those who were disabled, injured, or afflicted with industrial disease.
“This day serves not only as a time of remembrance, but also as a moment to reflect on the importance of working safely for ourselves, our families, and our coworkers,” says Joseph Hutter, Interim City Manager. “By reflecting on these losses, we renew our shared commitment to health and safety, and to preventing future tragedies so that every worker returns home safe every day.”
In 2025, Alberta mourned the loss of 144 individuals to work-related injuries or illnesses.
Where possible, flags will fly at half-mast at City facilities from tomorrow morning (April 28) until the morning of April 29. Those who are able are encouraged to mark the day with a moment of silence at 11 a.m.
The Medicine Hat Regional Safety Committee will host a Day of Mourning service at Saratoga Park – Memorial Arboretum in Medicine Hat at 11 a.m.
