Construction begins on Medicine Hat’s Southwest Substation
Medicine Hat – Construction will begin June 1 on a new substation in southwest Medicine Hat that will help support growth in the area and improve long-term power reliability for customers in the city’s south.
The substation, known as MHS-11, is located west of Gershaw Drive/Highway 3 within Medicine Hat’s municipal boundary. The approved site has no agricultural impacts and was selected in part because its location near Highway 3 minimizes potential social, environmental, and visual impacts.
Full details, including maps and project documents, are available online at medicinehat.ca/MHSS.
“As Medicine Hat continues to grow, this new substation will help ensure we can meet increasing electricity demand in the south end while supporting reliable service for customers,” said Rochelle Pancoast, Managing Director of Energy, Land and Environment.
As groundwork begins this spring, motorists may notice increased construction traffic accessing the site from Highway 3, north of Township Road 122 near Saamis Prairie View Cemetery and Crematorium. Drivers are asked to use caution and obey posted signage and directions from construction personnel.
The project has been in development since 2019. Following a previous application process, the City submitted a revised application in December 2024, which was approved by the Alberta Utilities Commission in April 2025.
MHS-11 is expected to be in service in spring 2027.
The Southwest Substation project is part of the City’s long-term planning to support growth and maintain reliable electric service for customers across the community.
