Emergency exercise happening at Co-op Place
The City of Medicine Hat’s Emergency Management Team is coordinating an active assailant drill at Co-op Place on Monday, April 20. While emergency vehicles and personnel will be on site, this is a planned exercise and there is no real incident or threat to the public.
Beginning at 9 a.m. the exercise will activate the Co-op Place’s Emergency Response Plan, and allow teams from participating agencies to practice drills and test response procedures. Police will use the opportunity to run training scenarios, starting with smaller scale threats and moving into a full-scale active assailant scenario.
Learnings from the exercise will be used to update and improve the Co-op Place Emergency Response Plan and the City’s Emergency Communications plan to ensure a more efficient and coordinated response in the case of a real incident.
Legislation requires municipalities to conduct at least one emergency exercise each year. These exercises provide valuable opportunities to prepare, learn, and continuously improve so the City is ready to respond when needed.
The exercise involves participation from Co-op Place, Medicine Hat 911, Medicine Hat Fire Service, Medicine Hat Police Service, HALO Air Ambulance, and Emergency Health Services.
