Neat to Know: January 30, 2024

Thanks for reading Neat to Know, a weekly roundup of City news, updates, and other important information. You can expect to see the week's most interesting content and even some that may have not been delivered through our regular channels.

State of the City address
Mayor Linnsie Clark delivered the 2024 State of the City address at the annual event presented by the Kiwanis Club of Medicine Hat and the Medicine Hat and District Chamber of Commerce on January 23 at the Medicine Hat Lodge.
Weren't able to make it? Rogers TV Medicine Hat captured the event and produced a video to watch online.
Big Marble Go Centre upgrades
This spring, the Cenovus Arena and the Kinsmen Aquatic Centre at the Big Marble Go Centre will close for nearly $3 million in total upgrades. This budgeted and scheduled upgrade ensures longevity of the facility and reduces the risk of multiple unplanned disruptions due to equipment failure.
The gymnasium, fieldhouse and South Country Co-op Fitness Centre at the Big Marble Go Centre will remain open during the work.
Camping registration opens February 1
Online reservations for the 2024 camping season at Gas City Campground (GCC) and Echo Dale Regional Park (EDRP) will open on Thursday, Feb. 1, at 7 a.m.

Crews who work with electricity every day are exposed to higher risk for serious harm if things go wrong. Keeping on top of safety procedures, rescue tactics, and technology changes is vital in such a specialized role.
Each year, our electric operation staff devote important time to inspect, test and calibrate specialty tools and equipment, and perform critical staff competency training to ensure they are adequately prepared to work safely.
Highlights from last week's training:
- Rescue competency training: pole top rescue, bucket rescue, bucket evacuation and vault rescue
- Third party training: high voltage cable, splices and tooling
- Mock outages to test and practice new technology for safer and more efficient restoration

How did the Jam Pail Bonspiel get its name?
Registration is now open for the 59th annual Jam Pail Bonspiel February 21 and 22 at the Kinplex. Medicine Hat's longest-running sporting event provides students their first introduction to the concept of curling in a fun activity during the February break.
But have you ever wondered how it got its unique name? In the early years, tin pails used for storing jam were filled with water and frozen and used as curling rocks. Today, we use sturdy plastic jugs filled with water for easier storage and a built in handle.
