Everything's gonna be all light

We’ve started to feel festive! Crews have begun installing the 354 light displays we put up each year to help get us in the holiday spirit.

Work began in the downtown core this week. The cheer will soon be spreading out to other parts of the city, including sections of the following roadways:

🎄 1 Street SE
🎄 Maple Avenue Bridge
🎄 8 Street NW
🎄 Division Avenue N near 20 Street NE
🎄 Kingsway Avenue and South Railway Street
🎄 Trans Canada Way SE
🎄 Carry Drive SE
🎄 Dunmore Road SE
🎄 13 Avenue SE

If you see workers present, please drive slowly to ensure safety for all as crews install these lights.

Carbon Monoxide Awareness Month

As temperatures drop and colder days approach, the risk of carbon monoxide (CO) poisoning increases. With many people turning on their heating systems, carbon monoxide — often called the “invisible killer” — becomes a serious concern. CO is an odourless, colorless gas produced when fuels like gas, oil, wood, or coal burn incompletely.

Medicine Hat Fire and Emergency Services (MHFES) offers the following tips to protect your family:

  • Install a carbon monoxide detector: Just like smoke alarms, CO detectors should be installed in key areas of your home, especially near sleeping areas. Test them monthly and change the batteries at least once a year. You can also purchase a smoke alarm and CO combo device.
  • Maintain heating equipment: have your furnace, boiler, or any other fuel-burning appliances inspected and cleaned regularly by a professional to ensure they are functioning properly.
  • Never run engines indoors: never run a car, truck, or any gasoline-powered engine in an attached garage—even with the door open. Portable generators should always be used outdoors, at least 6 meters (20 feet) from any door, window, or vent.
  • Proper ventilation: ensure that chimneys, vents, and flues are clear of debris, and make sure that exhaust systems are properly ventilated to the outside.

Open sesame

A pair of major infrastructure renewal projects were completed and the respective roadways re-opened to motorists this week.

The 8 Street SE Water and Sewer Rehabilitation and 7 Street NW and Altawana Drive Deep Utility Replacement projects both concluded on Tuesday, November 12.

Minor line painting remains on the 8 Street SE project. The mini roundabout located at 8 Street SE and 4 Avenue SE has been installed, with some line painting undertaken. The remaining line painting will be completed by the contractor in 2025. The mini roundabout located at 8 Street SE and 2 Avenue SE has received all necessary line painting.

The City of Medicine Hat would like to thank residents, business owners and motorists for their patience and understanding during these projects. This infrastructure replacement ensures reliable delivery of utilities for years to come.

Nearly-open sesame

Meanwhile, the 3 Street SE Downtown Utility and Surface Upgrades project is nearing completion. The intersection of 3 Street SE and 6 Avenue SE re-opened to motorists Thursday, November 14.

The 600 block of 3 Street SE returns to one-way traffic flow toward South Railway Street SE with the re-opening of this intersection.

The 500 block of 3 Street SE is set to re-open by the end of the week, weather permitting.

Some minor work remains in 2025, which is anticipated to last one week.

Economic Development

Matching skills to jobs and talent with growth opportunities

Employers continue to find it challenging to recruit the talent they need to grow and succeed. And job seekers are struggling to find job opportunities.

To understand the mismatch between skills and job demand, Medicine Hat Economic Development embarked on a project to understand the current labour market conditions in our city and region. This project was in collaboration with the Medicine Hat Local Immigration Partnership and Saamis Immigration, with support from the Government of Alberta Jobs, Economy, and Trade.

Read more on this project and its findings on our website.
