Portable skate ramp pilot returns to new indoor location

The City of Medicine Hat is pleased to announce the return of its portable skate ramp pilot project. The ramps are set to reopen at the Kinplex 2 Arena beginning Wednesday, July 15.

Following a temporary pause in June to address concerns regarding noise, staff have completed enhancements to the portable ramps and identified a new pilot location that supports the continued success of the pilot project. To help reduce noise generated while skating, spray foam insulation has been applied to the underside of the larger portable ramps.

"We appreciate the patience and feedback we received from both residents and the skating community," said Leah Prestayko, Acting Managing Director of Public Services. "Pilot projects are designed to evolve, and the input we received helped us identify improvements that allow us to continue offering this exciting recreational amenity in another environment."

The skate ramps will be available at Kinplex 2 from July 15 to August 20. The ramps will be temporarily unavailable from July 20 to 26 while the arena is closed during the Medicine Hat Stampede. The ramps will reopen following Stampede week.

Hours of operation

  • July 15 to 198 to 4 p.m.
  • July 20 to 26 Closed during Stampede
  • July 27 to Aug. 20 8 a.m. to 8 p.m.

The new indoor location at Kinplex 2 provides a dedicated recreational space with washroom facilities and drinking fountains, providing convenient access to water and other comforts for users to enjoy.

The portable skate ramp pilot project continues to explore new ways to maximize existing recreation infrastructure and expand skating opportunities throughout Medicine Hat. The City will continue gathering feedback throughout the pilot to help inform future improvements and potential locations.

The City of Medicine Hat appreciates the public's interest in this pilot project, and it remains committed to ensuring these ramps, and all other recreational amenities, meet the diverse needs of the community.
