- Only a select number of picnic tables are located in each of the three nominated parks (approximately five to seven tables per park).
- Tables are strategically selected. For example, they’re a distance from playgrounds, splash parks and other areas where children typically congregate.
- Designated picnic tables are first-come, first-served and cannot be booked.
- Picnic tables will be clearly identified with signage installed directly onto the table. Patrons consuming alcohol may only use designated tables and must stay at that table with any open container of alcohol.
- Provincial regulations still prevail whereby only adults may consume alcohol. City Bylaws are in effect, which dictate responsible use of parks and respecting the enjoyment of others. Alcohol consumption must follow City Policy and Procedure 0130 and all other applicable bylaws.
- Alcohol consumption at designated picnic tables is limited to the hours of 11 a.m. to 9 p.m., seven days a week - and only when food is present at the table.
- Responsible alcohol use is expected at all times.
Public engagement begins for Alcohol in Parks Pilot
Public engagement is now underway for the City of Medicine Hat’s upcoming Alcohol in Parks Pilot program. The program was created following a City Council-approved motion on May 4, 2026.
The pilot program permits the consumption of alcohol at designated picnic tables within Kin Coulee Park, Echo Dale Regional Park, and Strathcona Island Park. It runs from Thursday, July 2 to Wednesday, September 30.
The initial round of public engagement occurs before the program begins. A preliminary survey is now live and will remain open until Wednesday, July 1.
The goal of the survey is to understand resident sentiment on the following elements:
- Impact of the pilot on citizen’s use of public parks
- Public opinion of the pilot
- Public concerns regarding the program, and ways to help resolve these concerns
“We encourage residents to share their perspectives on this pilot before, during and after the program period,” said Scott Richter, Acting Director of Parks and Recreation. “Public feedback is essential to help the City better understand community experiences, identify potential concerns, and ensure a thorough, balanced evaluation of the pilot program.”
View the program conditions below and learn more about the pilot program on the Shape Your City project page prior to taking the preliminary survey.
Additional surveys will be conducted during the program period (July 2 to September 30), and once it has concluded (October 1 to 15). Survey feedback will be included in a pilot program summary report.
