What Matters to Hatters, Medicine Hat Transit partner on Kindness Campaign
Medicine Hat Transit is pleased to partner with the What Matters to Hatters Coalition for the non-profit’s fourth-annual Kindness Campaign, which kicks off on Friday, November 13 in conjunction with World Kindness Day.
What Matters to Hatters Coalition has offered different themes for its annual campaign, having previously focused on a random act of kindness challenge (early 2026) and celebrating kindness champions (2024-25). The coalition aspires to create a sense of hope, resiliency, and connection in the community, and it works to strengthen relationships, nurture a sense of belonging, and support the social well-being of all Hatters.
Year four focuses on fostering even stronger, kinder connections between Medicine Hat Transit drivers and ridership. The campaign will conclude Saturday, February 20, 2027, which aligns with the end of Random Acts of Kindness Week.
“We are proud to partner with Medicine Hat Transit for this year’s campaign, encouraging small, meaningful interactions that help bring people together and strengthen our sense of community,” said Taneil Zanidean, Chair of the What Matters to Hatters Coalition. “By taking thoughtful steps each day to nurture our relationships and strengthen social connections, we can build healthier, happier, and more connected lives and communities—because the future we hope for begins with the choices we make today!”
How to participate
Stickers and posters will be placed at bus stop shelters, and within all fixed route and adaptive transit buses. These materials will have a simple prompt:
Who can say “hello” first?
Similar campaigns and initiatives in other communities have proven that a small interaction goes a long way toward boosting the morale, mood, and happiness of those driving or boarding transit buses.
“Understandably, riders may be focused on the day’s tasks and getting where they need to go quickly and safely. And for our drivers, with hundreds of passengers per day, the focus can be staying on time and transporting riders safely,” said Cody Dzik, Manager of Transit Services with the City of Medicine Hat. “But, within the rush of boardings and travel, there’s an exciting opportunity to make a brief, kind interaction be the new norm – whether a hello, goodbye, or whatever kindness looks like to you. We’re thrilled to be a part of this campaign with What Matters to Hatters to inspire these interactions.”
Medicine Hat Transit riders are encouraged to be on the lookout for stickers and posters starting November 13, and to carry the spirit of this campaign year-round and yearly.
