Highlights from the June 1 meeting of City Council

  • Council approved updates to the Land Use Bylaw following a public hearing - improving clarity, reducing appeals, and creating clearer expectations for development.

City set to honour National Indigenous Peoples Day

The public is welcomed to attend our annual National Indigenous Peoples Day event at City Hall on Friday, June 19.

National Indigenous Peoples Day is officially held annually on June 21 in conjunction with the summer solstice. The event celebrates the rich history, traditions, cultures, and important contributions of all First Nations, Métis and Inuit residents who make Medicine Hat their home.

The National Indigenous Peoples Day celebration opens with a formal program beginning at 1 p.m. at the City Hall plaza by the clock tower. The event will move into the Helen Beny Gibson Lounge if the weather does not allow for an outdoor celebration.

New interactive Parks and Recreation mapping tool

We’re making it easier than ever for residents and visitors to discover parks and outdoor amenities with the launch of the new Parks and Recreation Explorer interactive mapping tool.

The online tool provides an engaging, easy-to-use way to explore some of the community’s most popular destination parks, playgrounds, pools, spray parks and recreation facilities. Residents can browse locations, discover amenities and get inspired to explore the city’s diverse offerings - whether close to home or within a neighbourhood they’ve never visited before.

Portable skate ramp initiative launching tomorrow

Starting Friday, June 5, our Parks and Recreation department will install yet another exciting new outdoor recreational amenity for the public to enjoy.

Portable skate ramps will be coming to two outdoor rink locations this summer, starting with the recently rebuilt East Glen Rink on Friday. These ramps allow residents to enjoy more versatile, year-round use at outdoor rink locations around the community.

This work begins with acknowledging the histories, cultures and contributions of Indigenous Peoples whose traditional territories our communities are built upon.

Sports Wall of Fame Inductees celebrated at May 31 Ceremony

The City of Medicine Hat proudly welcomed three new inductees to the Sports Wall of Fame during a special ceremony held at Big Marble Go Centre this past Sunday, May 31.

This year's inductees—Robert Grisonich, Wade Peterson, and Wes King-Hunter—were recognized for their outstanding achievements, dedication to their respective sports, and lasting contributions to our community's sporting legacy.

Family members, friends, fellow athletes, and community supporters gathered to celebrate the accomplishments of the inductees and reflect on the lasting influence they have had both on and off the field of play.

Congratulations once again to Robert Grisonich, Wade Peterson, and Wes King-Hunter on this well-deserved recognition. Their achievements and commitment to sport will continue to inspire future generations of athletes and community leaders in Medicine Hat.

Arts and Culture Legacy Award

Do you know someone who’s made significant arts and cultural contributions in Medicine Hat?

The award was created to serve as a visual memory of arts and culture contributions and achievements, and to ensure the individuals behind them receive due recognition.

The nomination period closes July 15 annually.

Water Management and Adaptation Strategy survey

The City is developing a long-term Water Management and Adaptation Strategy to help plan for future water challenges. With pressures like extreme weather, population growth, and aging infrastructure, long-term planning is more important than ever and we want to know what matters to you.

Head over to medicinehat.ca/waterstrategy before June 19 to complete a short online survey that seeks to understand:

  • which water challenges matter most to you
  • how urgent you think action is, and
  • your level of support for different approaches

When filling out the survey, you can enter to win a $75 prepaid credit card.

Big Truck Day

Friday, June 20 | 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. | Co-op Place parking lot

The Medicine Hat Public Library is hosting the second annual Big Truck Day at Co-op Place. The parking lot will be packed with big trucks for the second annual Big Truck Day. Kids of all ages can climb aboard, explore construction vehicles and other heavy equipment, and discover how these powerful machines help get the job done every day.

Extra activities include Facepainting and Pedal Tractors (partially funded by the City of Medicine Hat) and a FREE BBQ sponsored by Save-on-Foods!

As a Water Treatment Plant Operator, you’ll play a vital role in protecting public health and supporting essential municipal infrastructure.

In this position, you will help ensure the safe, efficient operation of equipment used in the production and distribution of the community's water supply, while also supporting the treatment of process residuals before safe return to the river.
