City launches open data portal
We launched an open data portal today! It’s another step in the journey to provide convenient access to public municipal information.
An open data portal is an online platform that hosts and provides public access to downloadable datasets such as transportation, infrastructure, or environmental information – all free from restrictions like copyright or patents. These portals promote transparency, innovation, and accountability, allowing developers, residents, and businesses to download, analyze, and use the data for free, provided they acknowledge the disclaimer.
Read our news release to learn more and view the open data portal.

That’s a lot of compost and batteries!
Last Saturday we hosted our second of three free compost giveaway and battery recycling events in 2026, and wow, what a great turnout!
290 households attended and picked up 18,035 kilograms of our SureGrow compost.
And, even more used household batteries were recycled this time: 100 kilograms worth. This means fewer chances of fires in our waste collection trucks and at the Waste Management Facility.
Totals after two events:
- 617 households in attendance
- 37,335 kilograms of compost given away
- 170 kilograms of used household batteries recycled
Did you miss our first two events, or want another opportunity to pick up free compost and drop off used batteries? Our third and final event is in September!
Saturday, September 12
10 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Land Use Bylaw Refresh: Clearer residential transitions
One of the most common concerns raised during engagement was how new housing fits into existing neighbourhoods. Many residents felt the three residential districts in the current Land Use Bylaw (LUB) allowed too much uncertainty, especially around medium‑density development.
In response, the LUB Refresh introduces a tiered residential framework with four residential districts. This approach distributes density, height, and building more gradually across neighbourhoods — helping residents better understand what can be built nearby and supporting sensitive, context‑appropriate growth.
You can learn more about the Land Use Bylaw Refresh by visiting our Shape Your City webpage.
What’s next? Feedback gathered over several years will be considered by City Council at the June 1, 2026 public hearing. A time for the hearing will be available when the Council agenda is set on Friday, May 29.
